At this time of year, home sellers start wondering “should I take my home off the market for the holidays?”. Traditional thinking is that there are more buyers in the spring and that’s when the market typically picks up too.
Yes, there are more buyers in the spring but also more inventory (competition) to choose from. As far as waiting 4-6 months to relist your home, no one knows what the future holds. However, we do know that one of three things will happen: the market remains the same, the market goes up, or the market goes down.
REALTORS® sell houses all year long. Buyers reasons for looking for a new property vary greatly from person to person. For some, the trigger to look can be the time of year, an expanding family, a pending job change, a substantial increase of income, etc…
Advantages for keeping your home listed during the holidays:
- Your home looks great now. All of the fixing, painting and de-cluttering is already done.
- Buyers that are out shopping at this time of year are motivated!
- One of the most common months for corporate relocations is January.
- The holiday season is a joyous one which leads to happy and optimistic buyers.
So, when asking yourself if you should take your home of the market for the holidays, there is no right or wrong answer. It really boils down to your personal situation and timing. There certainly are advantages to keeping your home on the market but if the holidays are chaotic for you, then maybe it is not a bad idea for your sanity to take it off the market.
